Call Us Quickly in the Event of an Emergency
When emergencies happen, it is crucial to act quickly. Eye emergencies are no different. Swift action may be necessary to prevent sight loss or long-term eye damage.
If you have an ocular emergency during our office hours, please call us and let our team know the details of your situation. If you have an emergency outside of our office hours, we recommend that you go directly to the emergency department.
What Constitutes an Eye Care Emergency?
A variety of conditions are considered eye emergencies, and all have their own symptoms. As a general rule, if you suffer from any of the following issues, seek help immediately:
- Trauma to the eye
- Something stuck in the eye
- Bruising around the eye
- Scratch, cut or abrasion
- Chemical splash
- Eye pain or soreness
- Extreme itchiness
- Discharge or crustiness
- Double vision
- Pupils that are not the same size
- Blood in the eye
What to Do & Not Do in the Event of an Eye Emergency
If you are experiencing an eye emergency, you may be tempted to treat it at home. It is important that you seek medical attention rather than self-treating. Here are some things to do—and not do—in the event of an eye emergency:
- DO NOT rub or apply pressure to the eye
- DO NOT use medications or ointments in the eye
- DO NOT try to remove foreign bodies
- DO NOT use tools or tweezers near the eye
- DO remove contact lenses
- DO flush the eye with cool water if you have experienced a chemical splash
- DO seek medical attention by calling our office or going to an emergency room if we are unavailable.
Preventing an Eye Emergency
Your eyes are precious, so preventing eye injuries is important. Here are some simple tips for preventing eye emergencies:
- Use protective eyewear when working in dangerous situations, with projectiles, or sharp objects
- Use caution and follow all directions when working with chemicals
- When participating in sporting events, wear protective eyewear if there is a risk of injury
- Use UV protective eyewear to prevent sunburns
- Keep heated tools like curling irons away from the eyes
When In Doubt, Seek Medical Attention
Always visit a medical professional to treat an eye injury. Preserving your sight is paramount, so if you are not sure whether your condition is an emergency, call our office for assistance.
